A
Brief History of
In 1900, a church school was
started at the home of Mrs. Sophia Moore. Under
the leadership of Rev. Brooks, the church school became the Beulah Baptist
Mission. Later, it was renamed East
Side Mission under the leadership of Rev. Norton Winston.
Two lots were purchased at
the cost of $250 and the East Side Mission became
In 1921, Rev. William
Hopkins became the pastor and the church began to grow.
Two more lots were purchased for $2,100 and a new church was built in
1931. Throughout The Depression, the
payments were made and the mortgage was burned in 1943.
After the passing Rev. Hopkins, Rev. Israel Booth became the Interim
Pastor until Rev. Minyard W. Newsome was called.
Ground was broken for the
present building on October 5, 1958 and through sacrificial giving, the church
was able to burn the mortgage in April of 1971.
After serving for 27 years, Rev. Newsome retired in 1973.
The Associate Minister, Rev. Charles Adams, assisted the deacons in
serving the congregation until June 1974, when Rev. C. L. Pryor was called from
The church has grown rapidly
and we have been truly blessed with visionary leadership and dedicated stewards
of God’s Word. One hundred eight
years as a beacon in the community is a testament to an institution that is
committed to accepting the challenge of continuing to “Reach Out and Serve.”
